Down in the heart of South Carolina's low country, Berkeley County now offers a wide variety of recreational opportunities.
Lake Moultrie is 60,400 acres in area, and was constructed between 1939 and 1941 as part of the Santee Cooper Project. Unlike most lakes in this state, a large part of the shoreline is accessible. The diversion canal connecting Lake Marion to Lake Moultrie is largely accessible to the public, as is the re-diversion canal connection Lake Moultrie to the Santee River. The Palmetto Trail runs around the northern and eastern shores of the lake.
Much of the eastern part of Berkeley County lies within the boundaries of the Francis Marion National Forest, which has numerous trails for hiking, horseback riding, off-road bicycling, and motorcycling.
