Handbook of South Carolina Wetlands
Swamps, marshes, and bays open to the public
Preserving wetlands has become one of the foremost goals of conservationists in recent years. This state is fortunate to have quite a number of them preserved and protected from development. Many are open for public recreation and are listed here.
Some of the most unusual wetland formations are the mysterious Carolina Bays. Nobody knows what formed these eliptical depressions in the ground, found mostly in the Carolinas. To see this strange natural feature, you can visit Woods Bay, Savage Bay, or the Carolina Bay Nature Reserve.
