This site is rich in natural, cultural, and historical resources. Once part of a 5500-acre rice plantation that flourished in the late 1700's and early 1800's, enslaved Africans applied their technology and skills in agriculture to make a highly successful series of rice fields out of this vast cypress swamp. Still visible on the site are earthen dikes, water control structures and canals that attest to the superior knowledge of their architects.
